LAS VEGAS (AP) — Clark County lawmakers declared a state of emergency in areas hit last week by flash flooding, and learned they'll receive $1.5 million in federal funds to help repair Interstate 15 northeast of Las Vegas. County commissioners approved the declaration on Tuesday, hours after U.S. Sen. Harry Reid announced federal help toward the $5 million in repairs to a washed-out stretch of I-15 near Moapa.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is working to ensure that a nuclear waste dump in his home state of Nevada remains mothballed even though the government has spent $15 billion on it. The Senate confirmed two nominees to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Tuesday. That ensures a majority of its commissioners have been appointed by Democrats. Some Republicans are talking about trying to revive the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump if their party takes control of the Senate in November.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The longest runway at McCarran International Airport is getting an overhaul starting this fall with help from the federal government. Congresswoman Dina Titus announced this week that the Las Vegas airport landed $26 million to fund a two-phase reconstruction project. Airport spokesman Chris Jones says asphalt on the nearly 15,000-foot-long runway will be removed and replaced with concrete, which is more durable.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — An elementary education major at the University of Nevada, Reno has been named one of two winners of a $4,500 memorial scholarship named after late Gov. Kenny Guinn. State Treasurer Kate Marshall announced on Tuesday that UNR senior Devan Gaddis is the northern Nevada recipient of the scholarship. Gaddis is working toward her degree at UNR with an emphasis in special education.
