WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is moving to deepen the U.S. military role in the Middle East. He's vowing to wage an unrelenting counterterrorism effort using airstrikes to target Islamic State fighters in both Iraq and Syria. Obama is outlining his strategy, which also includes training and arming Syrian rebels, in an address to the nation tonight.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee to an NFL executive five months ago. League executives insist they had not seen the violent images until this week. A voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirms the video arrived. But the law enforcement official says he can't confirm anyone watched the video.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A man convicted of gunning down his former common-law wife and her brother more than two decades ago in Houston has been put to death in Texas. Willie Trottie's execution was carried out shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his appeals. As he was about to be executed this evening, he asked witnesses to-- quote-- "Find it in your hearts to forgive me. I'm sorry."

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — More than 2,200 deaths in West Africa are being attributed to Ebola and the rest of the world is lining up to help fight the virus. The U.S. government and the U.N. are both stepping up efforts to aid the affected nations. Now, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation says it'll spend $50 million on the international effort seeking a vaccine and other therapies.

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Former Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney is drawing a sharp contrast between New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and President Barack Obama. Speaking tonight at a New Jersey fundraiser in honor of Christie's 52nd birthday, Romney derided Obama as someone who doesn't know what he's doing. He said Christie, the potential 2016 Republican contender, is someone who does.
