(KSL News) You may have noticed some new sculptures adorning streets in downtown Salt Lake. They're part of a public arts project, that's out of this world.
Twelve artists were commissioned to elaborate on the theme "Flying Objects." One statue was unveiled this morning -- Michael Bingham's whimsical creation of a life-size cow wearing a jet pack, so it can fly over the moon.
It was placed atop a pole near the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Theatre.
Bingham says his 12-hundred pound sculpture took more than a thousand hours to create.
Michael Bingham, Artist of "Flying Objects": Cow over moon: "Since I was a kid I loved that nursery rhyme about the cow jumping over the moon. But I always thought that was too far to jump, you know? So there must have been some other way the cow got over the moon. I just pictured in my mind this cow with a jet pack and decided to build it."
The statues will be on display for two to three years, each located near cultural facilities like Capitol Theater and Abravanel Hall.
