WASHINGTON (AP) — It's a formality but required by law. President Barack Obama has notified Congress of his order for last month's airstrikes and humanitarian aid drops to help Iraqis threatened by Islamic State militants. The Islamic State group has control of vast swaths of Syria and Iraq, has killed civilians and troops from that region and beheaded American journalist James Foley.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea has put three detained Americans on display. Jeffrey Fowle, Matthew Miller and Kenneth Bae also said they believed the only solution to their situation is for a U.S. representative to come to North Korea to make a direct appeal.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Marine Corps helicopter with 25 aboard has crashed in the Gulf of Aden (AY'-duhn). The Navy says all aboard were rescued. The 17 Marines and eight Navy sailors were recovered and were taken aboard the USS Mesa Verde. Some who sustained minor injuries were treated on the ship. The Navy said the crash was not the result of hostile activity, but the aircraft was transferring troops back to the ship from training in nearby Djibouti (jih-BOO'-tee).

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police in Portland, Oregon, say an officer shot a man who was a pointing a gun at passing cars on an Interstate 84 today. A police spokesman says the man ran from the freeway after he was struck by a bullet, and collapsed on a nearby street. He's expected to survive.

CHICAGO (AP) — Evidence of a widening wealth gap among Americans is also evident at the kitchen table. That's according to a 12-year study that also found that even among wealthier adults, food choices remain far from ideal. On an index of healthy eating where a perfect score is 110, U.S. adults averaged just 40 points in 1999-2000, climbing steadily to 47 points in 2009-10. Scores for low-income adults were lower than the average.
