OREM — A woman swallowed a stolen ring worth “several thousand dollars” in an attempt to hide it when pulled over, police said.

On Aug. 29 at about 7:30 p.m., Orem police were called to a suspected robbery at the Zales jewelry store in the University Mall on 575 E. University Pkwy., according to Lt. Craig Martinez of the Orem Police Department.

Martinez said Bryan Ford, 30, had been looking at a ring worth “several thousand dollars” when he took it and left the store. An employee at Zales gave chase, following Ford into the parking lot.

Ford got into a Pontiac G6 with a female driver, who Martinez identified as Christina Schlegel, 25. The pair left the scene going westbound. The license plate of the vehicle was covered with pink sticky notes, Martinez said.

An officer spotted a car matching the description of the vehicle about half an hour later. The officer stopped the car about 1.5 miles away at the Ventana Apartments on 1386 S. 400 West in Orem, Martinez reported.

Officers brought a Zales employee to the scene, and “she positively identified the man as the person who stole the ring,” Martinez said. Ford and Schlegel were then taken into custody.

“At the time, our officers were unable to find the stolen ring,” Martinez said. “After being sent on several wild goose chases, we found out that Christina had swallowed the ring in (an) attempt to hide it when they were pulled over by police.”

Schlegel was taken to the hospital to be checked by doctors before being booked into jail.

“It was confirmed in an X-ray that she had in fact swallowed the ring,” Martinez said.

Martinez said Ford and Schlegel were booked into the Utah County Jail on felony theft charges.
