AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — In overturning a provision of Texas' tough new abortion law, a federal judge says the requirement that clinics have hospital level surgery standards is the tipping point when considered with other "substantial obstacles." Those include mandatory sonograms and a 24-hour waiting period. Texas says it will move rapidly on an appeal. The law was to take effect Monday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The new health care law could become an issue at tax time next year. Without a new form from their insurance exchange, people won't be able to file their income taxes. Some tax professionals are worried that federal and state insurance marketplaces won't be able to get those forms out in time, creating the risk of delayed refunds.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Kiev says one of its fighter jets was hit by a missile from a Russian launcher in eastern Ukraine. Officials say the pilot ejected and is safe. NATO estimates that at least 1,000 Russian soldiers are in Ukraine and Kiev claimed this week that Russian tanks and armored vehicles entered the country.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia's foreign minister is criticizing the detention of 44 Fijian peacekeepers by Syrian rebels and called for their unconditional release. The U.N. says it is engaged in talks to secure the release of the peacekeepers from Fiji, whose camp on the Golan Heights was overrun by about 150 armed rebels on Thursday.
BONANZA, Nicaragua (AP) — Crews are working to rescue the 13 freelance gold miners who remain trapped in a collapsed shaft in northern Nicaragua. Eleven miners have already been rescued. The emerged from the mine more than 24 hours after the collapse.
