SALT LAKE CITY — Police caught a man they say escaped from the Salt Lake County Jail Sunday evening.

Jonathon S. Mize escaped from the garden area, located on the perimeter of the jail just before 6:30 p.m, according to Sgt. Cammie Skogg of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Mize was working in the garden when he jumped the chain link fence and ran northbound from the jail, Skogg said. He had been working in the garden since August 11, but was not considered an escape risk.

Police confirmed they found Mize just before 8:30 p.m.

Mize was found in a salvage yard next to the jail and Unified Police complex, along with roughly a dozen people.

"He clearly had intentions to escape," Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said. "He clearly had some support. We're in the process of finding what's gone on."

"It was very confusing. We're not sure who was supporting or what the exact circumstances were, but there are multiple people detained right now, and we're going to be interviewing them to find out what role, if any, they played in what appears to be a planned escape," Winder said.

Winder said this was the first time anyone physically escaped from the jail, but it will still prompt a review of jail protocols and how inmates are categorized.

Mize was previously booked into the jail on January 30 for several warrants including "retail theft, false info, identity fraud, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia," Skogg said.

Skogg said Mize is not considered violent or a risk to public safety.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, Unified Police and other agencies assisted in the search.
