CAIRO (AP) — "Israel will not negotiate under fire." That's what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is saying today about Egyptian-brokered talks aimed at halting the Gaza war. Palestinian negotiators are threatening to quit the Cairo talks unless Israeli negotiators return to Cairo. Meanwhile, Israel continues to respond to rocket fire from Gaza with airstrikes.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian state media reports 48 people were killed today when a regional passenger plane crashed after taking off from the capital, Tehran. The state-run IRNA news agency says the plane went down in a residential area after its engine went out.

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's governor has lost his bid for re-election in yesterday's Democratic primary. State Sen. David Ige (EE'-gay) promised to bring a less confrontational political style than Gov. Neil Abercrombie, and voters have rewarded him with a decisive victory. Abercrombie has spent nearly 40 years in Hawaii politics. He is the state's first governor to lose to a primary challenger.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — A spokesman for Tony Stewart calls the death of a fellow driver he struck and killed at an upstate New York dirt track last night a "tragic accident." The three-time NASCAR champion hit Kevin Ward Jr. as Ward walked toward Stewart's car following an on-track incident at Canandaigua (kan-un-DAY'-gwuh) Motorsports Park. In a statement, a representative for Stewart says, "our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state media says 18 people who took part in violence that killed dozens near the country's border with Pakistan have handed themselves in to police. Authorities say a terrorist gang attacked a police station and government buildings in Xinjiang (shihn-jahng) late last month, killing 37 people before police shot dead 59 of the attackers. Xinjiang has experienced rising unrest in recent months blamed on militants from the region's native Muslim Turkic Uighur (WEE'-gur) ethnic group.
