JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel and Hamas have agreed to a 72-hour cease-fire set to begin at 8 a.m. local time. The pause in the bloody conflict was brokered by Egypt. An Israeli delegation is heading to Cairo to work out a long-term truce. The nearly month-long war between Israel and Hamas has taken almost 1,900 Palestinian lives, most of them civilians. Sixty-four Israeli soldiers have also died, in addition to two Israeli civilians and a Thai laborer who worked in Israel.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 50 African heads of state are taking part in an unprecedented White House summit. Participants will address issues such as investment, poverty, terrorism, corruption and deadly diseases. Leaders from Sierra Leone and Liberia canceled their plans to attend because of an Ebola outbreak in West African that has killed nearly 900 people.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — It's safe to drink tap water in Toledo, Ohio, and its suburbs. A two-day ban has been lifted. Health officials say an algae-induced toxin contaminating Lake Erie has dropped to safe levels following intensive chemical treatments. Some residents say they'll avoid drinking the water for a few days.

WASHINGTON (AP) — He's being remembered for his sense of humor and for saving lives by being an advocate for gun control. Former White House press secretary James Brady died today. He was 73. Brady was shot in the head during a 1981 attempt to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. A federal law requiring background checks for handgun buyers bears his name.

MOUNT BALDY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say more than 30 homes have been damaged by flash floods that struck Southern California mountains. The fire chief in Mount Baldy, a tiny resort town, says at least a dozen of the homes were damaged so severely that they're uninhabitable..
