Divorce is costing Utah taxpayers $276 million every year, according to a study released by the Sutherland Intstitute's new Center for Family Society
Sutherland Institute adjunct fellow Bill Duncan says it brings up an important point. "There's also an economic cost. There's also a bottom line kind of figure, and for many legislators, particularly, that kind of thing is really, really important," he said.
Duncan hopes an astronomical dollar figure like $276 million might motivate lawmakers to stiffen laws to make divorce more difficult.
He says the study also shows that strengthening even a few family relationships can improve everyone's bottom line.
