Jon Dunn and Amanda Butterfield reportingA driver in Salt Lake City is under arrest after taking a destructive detour on 700 East, police say.
A brand new median on the street was just constructed a few months ago, but the driver apparently had some other ideas about the landscaping.
About 8:30 last night, Robert Moody drove a truckt right up on a 20 inch high median, and hit one tree after another.
"This was a man who drove his truck about a block on the island on 700 East, just by Liberty Park," says Salt Lake City detective Joe Cyr.
Cyr says the Moody finally high-centered his truck, but not before taking out 28 trees. When police arrived, officers say they got in a tangle with him.
"He damaged a police car and started throwing things at the officer. He refused to cooperate with anything the officer said. At that point the officer used his taser," says Cyr.
Salt Lake City Parks says the trees were donated. They're trying to find out if the driver had insurance so the trees can be replaced.
Police say he wasn't drunk or on drug. He was given a psychiatric evaluation.
Crews hope to have the median cleaned up soon. Total damage: $1,000.
