SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A drop in donations is causing financial problems at Discovery Gateway, a venue for children in Salt Lake City.

Discovery Gateway is a children's museum, a common attraction in big cities, where kids can build things, play with water and participate in other activities.

A Salt Lake County fiscal analyst predicts the museum could be at least $500,000 in the hole by mid-summer. The county owns the space and charges just a dollar a year for rent.

Discovery Gateway says attendance is up, but private giving is down 56 percent from projections. Director Maria Farrington says museum supporters just need to catch their breath.
