MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Authorities say at least seven people have been killed by a typhoon that lashed the Philippines today. Power is out in many areas as the storm tore roofs from structures, tore down trees and knocked down power poles. Officials say Typhoon Rammasun came through with 93-mile mph winds along with 115-mph gusts, but spared the capital, Manila, a direct hit.
BEIJING (AP) — Rescuers in southwest China have managed to drill a hole in a collapsed railway tunnel to send food, water and flashlights to 14 trapped workers. The local government says the workers are alive and safe but one other is still out of contact. The tunnel under construction collapsed Monday.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The race for the Republican Senate nomination in Mississippi could become more complicated today. State Sen. Chris McDaniel says he'll announce whether he will file a formal challenge of his loss to six-term U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran in the primary runoff. McDaniel claims there might have been thousands of improper votes cast. Certified results show Cochran won by more than 7,500 votes.
DENTON, Texas (AP) — Fracking will go on in Denton, Texas, which sits atop a large natural gas reserve. The city council this morning rejected a petition to ban further permits for hydraulic fracturing. More than 100 people spoke during a public hearing late yesterday and today. Petition supporters say the risks to human health and the environment outweighed the economic benefits. Industry groups and state regulators warned of litigation and a severe hit to Denton's economy.
MOSCOW (AP) — Investigators in Moscow say an improperly installed rail switch has been found at the site of a subway derailment that killed 22 people. Officials say two employees, the head of the track department and his deputy, have been detained. A committee spokesman says investigators are preparing to file charges.
