RENO, Nev. (AP) — Leaders of the union for transit workers in the Reno-area's bus system say they have at least temporarily averted a strike by agreeing to extend their current contract through the end of July while labor talks continue. Teamsters Local 533 announced the move today, a day after union members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles says almost 49,000 Nevada residents have taken the written test since January to obtain a driver authorization card, and almost 16,400 people received cards as of June 11. The cards are available mostly to immigrants who aren't eligible for a regular driver's license.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A federal appeals court says it will consider Nevada's gay marriage ban on Sept. 8. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has scheduled 20 minutes of oral arguments in the case. The court will also hear arguments that morning over similar cases in Idaho and Hawaii. Eight same-sex couples argue that Nevada's voter-approved 2002 law defining marriage as between a man and a woman is unconstitutional.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas judge is hearing concerns about the mental state of a 34-year-old mother accused of trying to kill her two children by throwing them out a window. The judge gave attorneys more time to review the medical records of Luz Robeldo Ibarra before an Aug. 27 preliminary hearing. Robeldo Ibarra was injured in the indent and was in a wheelchair when she appeared in court today.
