Tom Callan reportingSalt Lake City police are investigating the discovery of acid bombs.

A combustible mix of tinfoil in a plastic bottle containing an acidic substance; one acid bomb exploded outside an apartment near 900 East and 300 South.

"People [who] start combining volatile substances without the correct training and the correct environment to do it in can cause a threat to themselves and to other people," said Detective Jared Wihongi, spokesman for the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Wihongi says another was found unexploded in a gutter. "Sometimes these could be done as pranks, maybe it's done with ill intent," he said.

So far, police have no suspects and no witnesses. Wihongi says acid bombs pop up sporadically and have been discovered in other cities.
