In his weekly media message, Obama promoted Senate Democratic legislation that would let college graduates with heavy debts refinance their loans. For the Republicans, Florida Rep. Jeff Miller called attention to recent findings of widespread problems with delayed or mishandled appointments at VA hospitals.
DOVER, Del. (AP) — Questions continue to swirl around a closed major bridge after a Delaware businessman said he told state transportation officials nearly two months ago something was wrong with the span carrying Interstate 495. The bridge was only inspected this week and closed after tilting supporting columns were discovered. The state has said an engineer on another projected reported an issue May 29.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say gunman killed three police guards at a university gate and are holding dozens of students hostage in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, west of Baghdad. Parts of Ramadi have been held by Islamic extremists and other anti-government militants for months. The latest violence has been fueled by Sunni Muslim anger at the Shiite-led government as well as the civil war in Syria.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's new president is calling for dialogue with the country's troubled east but is talking tough about pro-Russia rebels he calls "gangsters and killers." Petro Poroshenko spoke after taking the oath of office. Poroshenko also promised amnesty "for those who do not have blood on their hands" and asked that everyone lay down their weapons.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — More than 50 people have been killed by floodwaters in a remote part of northern Afghanistan where officials say there's been no sign of outside help arriving. Thousands have fled their homes and a provincial official says the death toll could rise.
