SALT LAKE CITY — New research may have settled the age-old question: Which is better, cats or dogs?
According to a study by Carroll University’s Denise Guastello, cat owners are more intelligent than dog owners.
The survey revealed cat and dog people have different personalities, which probably contribute to their choice of pet. Those with dogs tend to be outgoing and friendly — while cat people are introverted and more open-minded.
“It makes sense that a dog person is going to be more lively because they’re going to want to be out there, outside, talking to people, bringing their dog,” Guastello said. “Whereas, if you’re more introverted and sensitive, maybe you’re more at home reading a book and your cat doesn’t need to go outside for a walk.”
Some 600 students were surveyed, asked about their pet preference and their own personality traits. Cat lovers, the study said, tend to be non-conformists, and scored higher on the IQ portion of the test.
“Fewer people also said they were cat fans — 11 percent of the survey group, compared to 60 percent identifying as dog fans,” Time magazine said in a story about the study.
