ST. GEORGE — Police in St. George are warning residents Tuesday of a scam where people call to demand payment for a fake outstanding warrant for their arrest.
Many people in St. George and Washington County have recently been contacted by a scammer who claims to be a lieutenant with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, according to St. George police. In recent months, law enforcement agencies in Salt Lake, Davis and Summit counties have also warned residents of the warrant scam.
"The individuals were told that they have an outstanding warrant for their arrest and need to pay a fine," a statement from the St. George Police Department reads. "They were asked to obtain a pre-paid visa card and provide the card number over the telephone to make payment on the warrant."
Investigators warned people who receive a similar call to not provide any information over the phone. Calls like this are always a scam because the Washington County Sheriff's Office and Washington County Justice Court do not collect payments in this manner, police said.
