NOM NOM CITY — If you ever take a trip to the Windy City, you might have to stop in at the Waffles Cafe for a newly invented piece of delight — the "wonut."
A chef in New York turned the heads of foodies across the globe with his "insanely addictive cronut" — the delectable cross between a croissant and a donut. Now, the Waffles Cafe has matched that tasty ingenuity by creating the "wonut" — a waffle donut.
Owner and chef Alex Hernandez told the Chicago Tribune that he launched the food item to create "extra buzz" for the opening of his second location of the Waffles Cafe. The wonut has created an international stir in the delicatessen world and the food item sold out after only 15 minutes during the cafe's opening debut, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The wonut is basically a small waffle that is baked, deep fried like a donut and then glazed and covered in toppings, according to Zagat. The wonuts are currently selling for $2.25 each.
In terms of health, it may be not be the breakfast of champions, but I would definitely stand in line for a wonut.
