Crews rescue family of 6 stranded in mountains

CACHE COUNTY — A family with four young children is safe at home after spending hours lost in the cold mountains of northern Utah.

The Cache County Sheriff said the family was turkey hunting when their car broke down. So they began walking out toward Logan Canyon.

Monday night Sheriff Lynn Nelson said rescue crews were trying to find the family after authorities received a cell phone call from them.

"I'm surprised they were even able to make a cell phone call out of that area,” he said.

“It would be a mountainous area,” he continued. “I’m sure there’s a road of some sort. Whether it’s free from snow, I would doubt that this time of year.”

The family did run into deep snow. Rescue crews finally found them around 10:30 p.m. and used snow machines to get the family off the mountain.

The four children are all under the age of 8, and the baby is 5 months old.

No one was seriously injured.
