Uinta Golf Tip of the Week: Stop chunking short irons

This week's Uinta Golf Tip of the Week question comes from John Turner of Layton: John says he can hit his long irons pretty well, but when he gets to the 8 iron through the wedges he tends to hit em fat ... the chunky monkey. Any tips?

The reason why you are chunking the ball with your wedges is because your wedges and high irons are shorter than your other clubs, which leads to your angle of attack being too steep.

Chunking the ball has everything to do with your angle of attack.

Imagine an outline of your golf swing from the top down to where you create contact. If you are bringing the club straight up with your arms and your wrists, it creates a steep angle of attack (your swing mimicking a giant V shape).

This straight up, straight down golf swing almost always leads to chunking the ball.

What you want to do in your golf swing, regardless of your club - whether it be your driver, 5 iron or a wedge - is create a wide angle of attack (think of a U shaped swing).

Extend your arms keeping your hands far away and try to maintain that same distance or angle of attack all the way through the swing.

Once you've got that down, try placing a tee and inch or two behind your ball out on the driving range. Focus on hitting the golf ball first without hitting the tee. In a perfect swing you will hit the ball first, and then create a divot - not the other way around.
