OGDEN — A SWAT team safely arrested a man who had several outstanding warrants Thursday evening after an armed standoff in which he threatened to "go out by suicide by cop," police said.

Ogden police were dispatched at 5:10 p.m. to a home in the 2800 block of Grant Avenue when the homeowner reported a man was trespassing and possibly in possession of a stolen vehicle.

The man was identified as Jared Etherington, 33.

The homeowner was cooperative when police arrived, allowing officers to enter to confront Etherington. Officers learned that the man was armed with a gun and refused to exit the home, making threats that officers would have to shoot him, police said.

Officers contained Etherington in the home and called the Metro SWAT team, which began negotiating with the man upon arrival. Around 9 p.m., Etherington emerged from the home unarmed after successful negotiations and he was taken into custody.

Ogden police detectives had an active case for Etherington for forgery and identity theft. Etherington also has outstanding warrants for burglary, theft and a traffic warrant, according to police.
