ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York's new state budget sets aside $9 million to help low-income HIV positive residents of New York City pay their rent.
The initiative aims to help those struggling with AIDS stay in their homes by capping their rental costs at 30 percent of their income. To be eligible, a person must be HIV positive and be receiving public assistance.
The budget signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo this month also authorizes New York City to create a rental subsidy program to help the homeless.
