MORMON STUDIES MINOR

Mormon Studies minor in the works at U of Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Students at the University of Utah may soon be able to earn a minor in Mormon Studies for the first time.

Director Bob Goldberg of the school's Tanner Humanities Center says discussions are underway with the dean's office to develop a 15-unit, secular course of study under the umbrella of religious studies.

Goldberg says a class examining the Book of Mormon as literature was offered in the fall and was well-received by students. He's proposing adding classes in Mormon architecture, Mormonism in politics and Mormonism and Christian theology.

The proposal still must clear several hurdles before approval, but Goldberg says the minor could be in place by Fall 2015.

The school has historically offered few classes on Mormonism, even though it's in the same city as the church's headquarters.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Two attendees of Saturday's Spanish Fork festival of colors face charges after one was accused of throwing colored cornstarch on an officer and another was accused of selling drugs.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office says 18-year-old Cory Sutterfield of Sandy threw dyed cornstarch on a sheriff's deputy in a crosswalk.

Attendees at the Holi Festival of Colors throw colored corn starch in the air every hour at the festival, but law enforcement do not participate.

MASSAGE PARLOR STING-OREM

2 accused of sex acts at Orem massage business

OREM, Utah (AP) — Police say they've arrested two women accused of offering sex acts to undercover officers at their massage business.

Authorities say 55-year-old Annong Zhao and 46-year-old Hong Zhang were taken into custody Monday. They were booked into Utah County jail on suspicion of unlawful conduct under the Massage Therapy Practice Act.

Police reports say officers had received a tip that the business was offering more than massages, and undercover police set up an appointment there in late March.

The reports say the women touched the undercover officers sexually during the massages, which violates massage business codes.

Neighbors tell KSL men would arrive at the business late at night, and the employees were scantily dressed.

DEPUTY DUI-CRASH

Ex-Washington Co. deputy pleads not guilty to DUI

LAVERKIN, Utah (AP) — A Washington County deputy has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence after rolling his police vehicle with his children inside.

Court records show Jason Lynn Adams entered the pleas last week. A preliminary hearing is set for May 27.

Adams had been placed on leave from the sheriff's office before resigning last month.

Authorities say he crashed his unmarked Ford F-150 on Feb. 9 on Highway 17 near LaVerkin.

Neither he nor his four children, who were passengers, had more than minor injuries.

The 39-year-old Adams has also pleaded not guilty to failing to stay in a lane.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATION

SLC police: 2 arrested on human trafficking charge

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake police say they've arrested two people on suspicion of human trafficking after a woman reported she was forced into prostitution before escaping in downtown Salt Lake City.

Authorities announced Monday that they'd arrested 26-year-old Jean Joseph and 24-year-old Tara L. Pinnock in the case.

Police Detective Robin Heiden says officers found a 23-year-old woman in a downtown parking lot after she called 911 on Sunday night.

Police say the woman told them she was kidnapped two or three weeks ago on a New York City street and was beaten so badly she lost consciousness. She says she tried unsuccessfully to escape in Denver from a man who was driving a black Mercedes Benz.

The woman was taken to the hospital.
