S.H.I.E.L.D. HEADQUARTERS — “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” opens up on April 4, but if you're a fan of Mr. Captain America himself, Chris Evans, you might not be seeing him in front of the camera anymore.
Evans told Variety he wants to retire from acting. “If I’m acting at all, it’s going to be under Marvel contract, or I’m going to be directing,” he said. “I can’t see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I’m contractually obligated to do.”
When Marvel approached him about playing Captain America years ago, Evans turned it down. They wanted him to sign on to do nine Marvel movies as Captain America and that was too much for him. He finally committed to doing six films.
With the completion of “The Winter Soldier,” Evans will have three more films to do to complete his contract with Marvel. After that, he plans to retire from acting.
What will Evans do after retirement? His new passion is directing, which he’s given a chance to do thanks to “1:30 Train”, a drama he shot in 19 days in New York City starring himself and Alice Eve.
“I’ve known for a while I wanted to direct,” Evans told Variety. “But (time) never really opens up. There’s another movie to do, there’s another acting job. It just got to a point where I was like, you know what — I have to do this.”
Evans, however, says he's appreciative of what acting has done for him.
"Without these movies, I wouldn't be directing," he told Variety. "They gave me enough overseas recognition to greenlight a movie. And if I'm speaking extremely candidly, it's going to continue to do that for as long as the Marvel contract runs."
