BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — Officers in Big Cottonwood Canyon saw car tracks going off the road and discovered a vehicle in the creek early Wednesday morning.

When officers reached the car, no one was inside. Officer Jared Peatross of the Unified Police Department said they found the name of the car's owner, however.

"I contacted the registered owner," he said. "The last time she saw her car was at 11 o'clock (Tuesday night) and it was parked out in front of her house."

It turns out the car had been stolen. The thief apparently wanted to get rid of it, so he or she took it to Big Cottonwood Canyon and sent it 80 feet down the hill, Peatross said.

"It is a relatively common thing that people take cars and dump them into a river or off a hillside," he said. "It just adds insult to injury after having your car stolen."

No arrests have been made in connection with the theft.
