INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Seven media groups won "Grand Slam" honors in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors' writing and sections contest that was held this week.

The Boston Globe and Washington Post, competing in the over-175,000 circulation division, earned top-10 recognition for their daily, Sunday and special sections to augment a top-10 website award previously announced in the Class A website division (over 2 million monthly unique visitors).

The Oklahoman won top-10 section awards in the 75,001-175,000 circulation division as well as top-10 in the Class A website division.

The Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World and The Tuscaloosa News won top-10 section awards in the under 30,000 circulation division, as well as top-10 in the Class C website division (under 500,000 monthly unique visitors).

The Opelika-Auburn (Ala.) News and the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle each won top-10 section awards in the under 15,000 circulation division as well as top-10 in the Class C website division.

The APSE awards, voted on by sports editors from across the nation during four days of judging, honor work published in 2013.

Eleven newspapers won Triple Crowns, signifying top 10 honors in three of four section/website categories. Those include:

— Over 175,000 circulation: Chicago Tribune; Kansas City Star; Los Angeles Times; New York Daily News; The New York Times.

— 75,0001-175,000: The Courier-Journal; Omaha World-Herald.

— 30,000-75,000: Buffalo News; The State (Columbia, S.C.); The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pa.).

— Under 15,000: The Marietta (Ga.) Daily Journal

The New York Times and The Tuscaloosa News led all news organizations with eight writing awards each.

Tommy Deas of The Tuscaloosa News led the individual writing awards, capturing five honors, including breaking news, features, projects and explanatory in the under-30,000 circulation category.

The following writers each earned three awards: Todd Jones of The Columbus Dispatch; Jeff Lockridge of The Tennessean; Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times; Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald; Brent Schrotenboer of USA TODAY Sports; Jim Seimas of the Santa Cruz Sentinel; Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star; and Aaron Suttles of The Tuscaloosa News.

The top five finalists in the writing categories will be announced later this month. Winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE summer convention in Washington, DC.
