Liberty Institute Offers Ready Defense of Kansas School Board for Free

Against Anti-faith Group's Demands

SPEARVILLE, Kan., March 7, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This week,

Liberty Institute attorneys offered to defend for free an historic

elementary school building in Spearville, Kansas-a town of about 800

people-against threats of legal action from the anti-religion group,

Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU), who recently

demanded demolition of a small cross atop of the Spearville Elementary

School building that has stood, without complaint, for almost 90

years.

"Kansans need to know this atheist group is being deceptive in its

suggestion that the Constitution requires Americans to whitewash over

our country's religious heritage," said Liberty Institute Senior

Counsel Jeremiah Dys. "We encourage Spearville Superintendent Stegman

and the Board of Education to courageously continue not to be

intimidated by AU's bullying tactics and to know that they have a

friend in Liberty Institute, willing to defend them for free."

Liberty Institute's letter, which can be read in its entirety here:

http://www.libertyinstitute.org/document.doc?id=134, was sent to

Superintendent Stegman and the entire Spearville Board of Education

soon after the Spearville Board of Education refused to answer AU's

repeated demands to remove a small cross from the top of Spearville

Elementary School. The school, originally built as a Catholic school

soon after the conclusion of World War I, was later donated to the

town of Spearville in 1975. Generations of Kansans have been educated

in Spearville Elementary School--without complaint until AU made its

demands earlier this year. Liberty Institute offers to provide pro

bono legal assistance to the Spearville Board of Education should AU

follow through on its threats of litigation.

Liberty Institute is a nonprofit legal group dedicated to restoring
