KAYSVILLE — A man and a woman were found dead in a home in Kaysville after a welfare check, police say.

At about 2:13 a.m., police responded to a welfare check at 220 S. Christine Way after a newspaper delivery person reported that a large number of newspapers had not been collected at the home, said Lt. Kenton Pies of the Kaysville Police Department.

When officers arrived, they got no response at the door. However, a light was on in the home, and officers “observed an individual inside the residence that was not responding to officers,” Pies said.

Officers then used force to enter the home and found 72-year-old Jeffery Wayman dead in the living room and his wife, 62-year-old Judith Wayman, dead in the bathroom. Police said they had possibly been dead for a week.

The Kaysville Fire Department also responded to check the home for possible levels of carbon monoxide, but there was “no report of any signs of carbon monoxide,” Pies said.

The victims were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies to determine cause of death.

Pies said that police currently have no reason to suspect foul play, but the case is still under investigation.

Wayman's ex-wife told KSL's Sandra Yi that he had some health issues, and that he also cared for his wife, who was in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

She said Jeffrey Wayman's stepdaughter checked on the couple three weeks ago and everything seemed fine.

Neighbor Joe Jeppson said he rarely saw Jeffrey Wayman and never saw Judith Wayman.

"They were very reclusive," Jeppson said. "In fact, I've lived here for five years now and never talked to him."

Another neighbor who recently moved in across the street said he didn't even know anyone lived in the home.

Wayman's ex-wife also said they had children together but the kids were estranged from their father.

Police are now awaiting autopsy results.
