CEDAR CITY — A man died Monday while driving himself to the emergency room in Cedar City, according to police. The car the man was driving subsequently crashed.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the accident happened on State Road 56 west of Cedar City. Royce said investigators believe the 49-year-old driver was on his way to the emergency room at the time of the crash.

UHP was initially called on reports of a fatal car crash. When they arrived at the scene, Royce said, it became evident that the man had died in the car prior to the crash due to an unidentified medical problem.

"There were no skid marks or anything that would lead us to believe he died as a result of the crash," Royce said.

A female passenger confirmed the man was on his way to the hospital at the time of the crash. Royce said police are not releasing the name of the victim due to family notification.

Investigators are looking into what medical issue the man may have had at the time of the accident.
