Tom Callan reporting The 2008 Utah legislative session is history, but KSL Newsradio discovered that one extra vote could have made a big difference.
An amendment to reduce class size failed by only one vote in the House. "The vote hung in the balance for quite a while before they settled in on the final vote, which was 38-37," explained Vic Arnold, with the Utah Education Association.
Arnold says the amendment would have shifted $5 million away from new science and math teachers to smaller classes. "It would have been a small step in grades one through three," he said.
He says the amendment would have cut class sizes in the most crowded districts by two or three students.
