Becky Bruce reporting More Utahns are expected to take the General Educational Development (GED) exam this year as the economy continues to slow down and unemployment goes up, but not all GEDs are created equal.

Beware of any claim that you can get your GED in as little as a half-hour online. Murray Meszaros, state administrator for GED testing, says it's a scam.

"The GED test typically takes seven hours to take, and you must take it under controlled circumstances in an official testing center somewhere in the state of Utah," Meszaros explained.

Meszaros says you can also tell if the GED test you're planning to take is real by looking at the price. A real GED test will cost you $66. A fake GED test can cost anywhere from $200 to $500.

Meszaros says there is a correlation with a slowing economy and higher unemployment and people trying to advance their careers--be that with the GED, getting a college degree, or other forms of continuing education.

In the state of Utah, the median age of GED test-takers is 18, and the average age is 21.2. Alaska and Utah have the youngest age of people taking the GED nationwide.
