SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The speed limit on Interstate 15 from Nephi to Cedar City could soon be 80 mph -- or higher.
On Wednesday, a Senate committee approved the possibility of raising the speed limit beyond 75 mph on that stretch. The Utah Department of Transportation still would need to determine if it's safe before any changes are made.
If 85 percent of drivers are already going faster than 75, the speed limit could be raised. A change would give Utah one of the highest speed limits in the country.
House Bill 406 will now be heard on the Senate floor. If it passes there, it will go to Gov. Jon Huntsman.
