DRAPER, Utah (AP) -- Site plans for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple have been approved by the city planning commission.
The Corner Canyon temple will be the third in the Salt Lake Valley, joining the downtown Salt Lake City and Jordan River temples.
"It will add some dignity to our community," Draper Mayor Darrell Smith said. "As the community matures and as time passes and different things come and go, this is something that will be our constant."
Draper's planning commission approved the plans Thursday. The temple will sit on 12 acres, where a church meeting house was completed last year.
The 57,000-square-foot temple will be 166 feet high from the main level to the top of the structure's only spire and a variety of trees to surround the building.
"It has a beautiful view of the total valley," city manager John Hendrickson said.
The church has not announced when construction on the temple will begin.
Church President Gordon B. Hinckley announced construction of a fourth Salt Lake valley temple during the church's October 2004 General Conference. He said the new building will be in the southwest side of the valley is needed to relieve overcrowding at the Jordan River temple. A specific site has not been announced.
