Becky Bruce reporting The Humane Society and other animal rights groups are rallying the troops on Utah's Capitol Hill.
The animal lovers are out in force today trying to be that squeaky wheel getting the lawmakers' grease. Utah Humane Society Director Gene Baierschmidt says the goal is to get an animal torture bill passed in the House and a weaker version defeated in the Senate.
"We believe just real egregious acts of torture need to be treated as a felony, as they are in 43 other states," Baierschmidt said.
Recent attacks on family pets are misdemeanors under current law. The Senate's bill would make it a felony on a second offense, but Baierschmidt likes the House version's first offense provision better.
