LOGAN— Logan police officers say they discovered 51 marijuana plants when they responded to reports of a burglary Friday.

One officer was overpowered by the smell of raw marijuana coming from a window fan in one of the apartments as he was on his way out of the complex, Logan City Police said in a press release. The officer had just finished gathering all of the needed information for the burglary case nearby.

A warrant was drafted and approved by a judge after other officers came to the area and said they detected the same odor, police said.

The marijuana plants were found in one of the rooms and were in various stages of growth. Containers holding dried marijuana and cultivation devices were also found in the apartment, according to the release.

Police said two men were in the apartment when the police entered. Dante Salvati, the 23-year-old renting the apartment, was booked into Cache County Jail for investigation of cultivating marijuana, a second-degree felony, and possession of grow equipment, a misdemeanor.

Both charges were enhanced due to being within 1,000 feet of a church or school, Logan City Police said.

Martin Brown, 27, was visiting the apartment at the time police arrived and was booked for investigation of misdemeanor possession of marijuana by consumption.
