NEW YORK CITY — Anyone who has ridden public transportation anywhere has seen a few things they can’t ever un-see. But New York Subway riders encountered something that seems unreal even for New York: a small, dead shark aboard the train.

The Gothamist reported that a dead shark somehow ended up on the Queens-bound N Train just after midnight Wednesday. Several riders snapped photos of the shark lying under the seats of the train car.

"I board a car that's not terribly full and as soon as I enter, a stench hits my nose. It's not the typical urine/trash smell, it's...fishy? I look down to the end of the car to see a dead shark on the floor,” Mary told the Gothamist. “I think I stood there for a good minute just staring, thinking 'Is this for real?! Oh come ON, NYC!' ”

As of Wednesday mid-morning, nobody reported seeing the shark board the train.

Mary said that as the train traveled to Astoria, more passengers boarded, becoming more and more excited about it. One dude even gave the shark a Metro Card and a cigarette for a photo op. Some speculated it might be a stunt for Shark Week promotion.

By the time the train reached the Queensboro Plaza, about 12:30 a.m., the conductor had got wind of the sea creature aboard and moved people out of the car.

“A Train Service Supervisor placed the dead shark in a garbage bag and disposed of it in the trash. The Road Car Inspector at Ditmars made sure the car was clean and returned it to normal service,” the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported.
