LAYTON — Valley View Golf Course was vandalized sometime early Wednesday morning.
The vandals managed to start one of the course's tractors in the maintenance sheds, even without a key in the ignition. The tractor damaged part of the sixth fairway.
"We don't have any idea how the tractor got started," said Valley View pro Dustin Volk. "They didn't get our key, it was in a locked box.
"You can see right through here they came all the way up, and being wet, they got stuck and dug down quite a bit," Volk added. "So you can see it will take a little bit of effort to fix this."
Volk is frustrated with the damage and has been trying to make sense of why it was done. He was alerted to the damage at 6:30 a.m.
"It's pretty frustrating," he said. "You put a lot of effort into this facility and kids, maybe, somebody came out thinking it's a lot of fun. But the paying customer will pay for it in the long run."

The sixth fairway was the only part of the course that was damaged by the tractor. For Volk and his staff, they feel pretty lucky.
"The tractor wasn't destroyed so we're lucky there," he said. "So I think we will have serious prevention going forward."
Despite the damage, the hole will still be open for play.
"We will have to play it 'ground under repair' for the next couple of weeks," he said. "We will aerate tomorrow and seed it, and hopefully before the end of the season we won't know anything happened."
The Layton city police department has the case file and are hoping someone will come forward with information. If you have any information about the damage done at the Valley View Golf Course, contact the Layton Police Department.
