The winner of The Big Gay Read has been named as Armistead Maupin's story of straight and gay life in San Francisco entitled Tales of the City.
The award, which was reportedly launched last summer, invited readers across Britain to nominate the novels they "cherished above all others", The Guardian reported.
Second place went to Sarah Waters for her book Tipping the Velvet. Waters also took joint fifth place for Fingersmith. Also in joint fifth place was Calendar Girl by Stella Duffy and Jake Arnott's The Long Firm.
In third place was Jeanette Winterson for her novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit and fourth place was taken by Jackie Kay's Trumpet.
Maupin will be presented with the award on Saturday (13 May) in Manchester, UK at Tales In Our City, part of the Big Gay Read literature festival.
