PROVO — Approximately 8,000 runners descended on Provo Saturday as participants in this year's Utah Valley Marathon.
The marathon, now in its sixth year, is known for its downhill course in Provo Canyon into downtown Provo. Each year, the marathon and the crowds surrounding it grow, with about one-third of the runners coming from out-of-state. According to the race director, Hyrum Oaks, runners from 49 states participated in the race.
Bryant Jensen, of Farr West, finished first in the men's race in 2 hours and 20 minutes. Amber Green, from St. George, completed the women's race in first place, crossing the finish line at 2 hours and 51 minutes. She took 12th place overall.
Trevor Dolby, a southern Nevada resident who frequents Utah marathons, said he was challenged by the marathon's uphill portions, and finished about 15 minutes slower than he expected.
"I'm pretty consistent," he said.
For many of the Utah contestants, it was a family affair.
"It's a family thing. My mom and dad and brother all ran it," said first-time half marathon runner Morgan Baker of Sandy. "My dad and brother are running the full and my mom and I just got done with the half."
