Tom Callan reportingA bill that would prohibit quotas for traffic tickets was approved by the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice standing committee today.
Before the vote, Jenny Hansen testified that she was pulled over for not turning on her blinker when she changed lanes. She asked the apologetic officer if he had a quota. "He said, 'I hate to give you a ticket, but I have to,'" Hansen testified.
Mark Johnson with the city of Ogden asked the committee how do you evaluate an officer if they don't write tickets? He said, "They don't want to write tickets, they don't want to go to court, they don't want to have to come in on their day off."
Rep. Neil Hansen's bill, HB264, passed the committee by a vote of 6-1. It now goes to the House floor.
