PAISLEY, Fla. — A 300-pound black bear locked itself inside a Florida family's car this week and destroyed it in an attempt to escape the situation.
Randy Moon woke up at about 2:30 a.m. Monday to a strange noise outside his home. When he looked outside, he saw a bear tearing his daughter's car to pieces from the inside. He grabbed his keys and unlocked the door so the bear could get out, he said.
"I stood there and opened the door — the bear and I were face-to-face. I said, 'you gotta get out of here.' He was foaming in the mouth," Moon told ABCNews.com.
Moon said the bear ran away once he opened the door — but the car was totaled: consoles destroyed, the interior roof torn to bits and the doors scratched apart.
The family's insurance does not cover bear attacks, so the car, which was recently purchased, is a total loss. Moon found another car for his daughter, a single mother. The dealer knocked $1,000 off the price of the car, he said.
