HYRUM — A woman and her grandchildren are safe after a fire Friday destroyed much of their Hyrum home.

The fire was reported to the Cache County Fire Department by a passerby. Smoke and flames were visible when officials arrived on scene.

The fire is believed to have started in the carport and spread to the house, according to officials.

Several remodeling jobs done to the house made the fire more difficult to fight, as did the absence of fire hydrants in the area.

The narrow road the house is on made it difficult to get trucks to the scene of the blaze.

The amount of damage to the house is currently unknown, but was significant. Alternate housing arrangements for the family have been made.
