SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Florida-based railroad company on Thursday acquired the Utah Central Railway, a short line freight railroad with headquarters in Ogden, Utah.

In a news release, Patriot Rail Corp., of Boca Raton, Fla. says acquisition of the Utah firm adds 34 miles of rail line to its holdings. Patriot now operates three short line railroad and owns or leases 246 miles of rail in Alabama, Montana, Tennessee and Utah.

Established in 1995, Utah Central Railway handled about 8,500 carloads in 2007, shipping sugar, asphalt, lumber, plastic, steel, LP gas, fuel, grain and chemicals. The company employs 17 people and operates five locomotives.
