OGDEN, Utah — Weber State head coach Jody Sears is entering his first year without the interim tag and has now hired his staff for the coming year.
Sears has named Robin Pflugrad as his offensive coordinator, Eric Lewis as his defensive coordinator and Steve Morton as an associate head coach. Last year Lewis and Morton were on the staff at Weber State.
Pflugrad has been in the coaching ranks for over 30 years. Recently he spent 2001-05 as the tight ends coach at Washington State. Then coached at Oregon under Mike Bellotti as a wide receivers coach from '06-'08.
"I'm very excited for these coaching staff announcements and the direction our football program is headed," Sears said. "Coach Pflugrad has great experience and expertise as a football coach and is a wonderful person and family man. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful person on our staff. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our program and his track record speaks for itself."
His most recent job was as the head coach at Montana. He was head coach from 2010-11 and had an 18-7 record. If his play-calling style keeps up he will operate an up-tempo offense, much like Oregon has shown.
"I'm very pleased to have Coach Morton and Coach Lewis take an elevated role in our program," Sears said.
Lewis spent last year as the cornerbacks coach, and will coach the secondary along with being the defensive coordinator. He has as defensive coordinator at Eastern Michigan and spent two years working for the Green Bay Packers as defensive quality coach.
He played college football at San Diego State and his father is long-time NFL coach Sherm Lewis.
"Coach Lewis also has a great amount of experience in college and pro football," Sears said. "I'm very excited for his experience and energy to continue to grow our defense to a championship level."
Morton spent last year coaching the offensive line in his first year with Weber State. He has coached for nearly 40 years total, starting in 1975 as a graduate assistant at Washington State. He has coached at Washington, USC, Stanford and San Jose State. He was the offensive coordinator for SJSU for four years.
"I've known Coach Morton for many years and know what he brings to our program," Sears said. "Not only is he a great offensive line coach, he is a great advisor and counselor to the day-to-day operations."
