SALT LAKE CITY -- Children in Utah can enjoy their own film festival, complete with screenings and workshops.

The Utah Film Center continues the precedent set by last year's inaugural Tumbleweeds Film Festival with independent and international film screenings. The films are both feature-length and short films from all over the world.

Those filmed in foreign languages are subtitled for kids, and for those who can't keep up with the subtitles, the festival offers a "subtitle reader." The festival directors want to expose Utah children to films that are unavailable in commercial movie theaters.

The festival, designed for children ages 4 to 14, also puts on workshops for the festival goers. The work shops are a partnership of the Utah Film Center and Spy Hop Productions focusing on different aspects of filmmaking.

We asked aspiring movie buffs and their parents what makes a movie worth their time. Answers included action, originality and good characters.

The festival runs through Sunday at the Rose Wagner Theater, as well as the Salt Lake Library.
