SALT LAKE CITY — After heavy overnight and continued snowfall throughout the day, several school districts cancelled school Friday. Granite School District did not and Saturday, the district's superintendent called parents to apologize for not following suit.
Superintendent Martin Bates spent part of his Saturday calling parents to apologize for not calling a snow day for Friday after winter storm Gandolf left the roads slick with snow.
"Obviously, yesterday's decision was based, in part, whether our schools could function and we felt comfortable moving forward, believing our students could get to school safely," said Granite School District Spokesman Ben Horsley said. "And it turned out that wasn't the case and that's what we regret."
The district said it is working on ways to better determine how to handle a situation like this in the future and how to keep students safe.
The winter storm closed colleges and school districts Friday. As of 10 p.m. Friday, emergency personnel reported 404 traffic accidents due to the storm.
