(KSL News) The Utah Geological Survey is concerned the fault near St. George may be more active than previously thought.
A lot of development is taking place along the fault, and a lot more will take place if the Lake Powell pipeline is built.
Scientists say recent trench exposures indicates more persistent and recent activity.
The nearby, active Hurricane fault has long been recognized as a potential source of large earthquakes. If the Washington fault, which is closer to St. George than the Hurricane fault, proves to be more active, the recognized earthquake hazard in southwestern Utah could increase significantly.
