SALT LAKE CITY — A man who has volunteered his time and knowledge at Hogle Zoo for the past six years wins this week's High 5.

Cody Bollschweiler, 20, began volunteering at the zoo when he was 14 years old. His job is to educate visitors about the animals.

"I love doing what I do," he said. "I have a passion for animals and hope to one day have a career working with animals, in research or something along those lines."

Some of his favorites to work with are the Birds of Prey. "They're amazing creatures," he said. "Working up close with a dangerous bird is awesome."

"I used to be afraid of birds until I started working at the zoo. Now I love them," he added.

Volunteers
Anyone interested in volunteering at Hogle Zoo can visit its website at www.hoglezoo.org and apply online. Volunteers are trained twice a year.

The zoo could not operate at the capacity it does without all its volunteers.

"As a nonprofit, we really can't function without them," said zoo spokeswoman Erica Hansen. "With a great volunteer staff, we're able to make great one-on-one guest connections."

As part of the High 5, our partners Les Schwab provided Cody with a gift basket and $100 toward new tires. If you'd like to nominate someone for a High 5, do so here.
