(KSL News) -- Famers are feeling the pressure from high oil prices.
The National Farmers Union says the high prices could end up bankrupting farmers and ranchers since they are unable to pass on the price increase to consumers. They say the time is now to start looking for fuel alternatives, before it's too late.
Arthur Douglas, Utah Farmers Union: "Here in this state we produce a crop called safflower. Thousands of acres. I raise a few acres of it on my place. Most of it goes to birdseed. Quit being so dependent on fossil fuels."
In the short-term, farmers and ranchers are hoping money from an emergency appropriations bill will help defray fuel costs. The bill goes before the Senate next week.
